5 L.I. School Districts Seek School Budgets That Break State Tax Cap
WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - A handful of Long Island school districts will ask voters next month to approve education budgets that would break the state tax cap.
As WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported, five of Long Island's 124 school districts have plans to pierce the state tax cap.
The districts considering breaking the cap are all in Suffolk County: West Babylon, Sayville, East Hampton, East Quogue and Bridgehampton.
Residents had mixed reactions to the idea.
"As long as the kids are happy. Everything in this world you gotta pay a little bit more to get a little bit more, right?" one West Babylon parent said.
"The taxes on the island, 80 percent of our school funding comes from the people and people have to hold the trustees accountable because it affects them in their pocket, ultimately," another homeowner told Xirinachs.
Districts trying to break the cap need 60 percent voter approval when the proposed education budgets go to vote next month.
