Police: 5 Killed In Head-On Crash On Montauk Highway In Quogue

QUOGUE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Five people are dead and another is in critical condition Sunday following a head-on crash on Long Island.

It happened on Montauk Highway near the intersection Quogue Street (East) around 11 p.m. Saturday.

According to police, a red Nissan Maxima heading westbound on Montauk Highway left its lane and crashed head-on into an oncoming gray Toyota Prius.

The driver of the Nissan Maxima, 22-year-old Justin B. Mendez, of Brookhaven, was pronounced dead at Southampton Hospital.

The driver of the Toyota Prius, 32-year-old Farhan Zahid, of Bay Shore, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three of his passengers were also killed -- 20-year-old Michael O. Farrell, 25-year-old James P. Farrell and 25-year-old Ryan J. Kiess, all from Manhasset.

A 22-year-old woman who was in the Toyota Prius is still listed in critical condition.

Montauk Highway remained closed from Old Depot Road to Quogue Street (East).

Police believe Mendez may have been speeding.
