4 Hurt, Including Child, When Car Slams Into Smithtown Doctor's Office
SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Four people were injured, including a 75-year-old driver and a 9-year-old boy, when a car slammed into a pediatric doctor's office on Long Island.
As CBS 2's Joe Biermann reported, Suffolk County police said the vehicle slammed into the single-story medical building at 300 Middle Country Rd. in Smithtown shortly before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Several people were trapped in the vehicle and in the doctor's office, and several special rescue crews had to come in to assist, Biermann reported.
The victims included the woman who was driving and the boy, who was inside the doctor's office, police said. Also injured were a female employee of the doctor's office and the boy's mother.
They were all taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook. The doctor suffered a broken arm, and the others suffered minor injuries, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.
Dr. Richard Ancona, who works in the building, rushed to help the injured.
"Very scary because there was blood on the kid's shirt, and I couldn't tell from the beginning as to what was wrong with the kid, but I couldn't get him out of there because the size of those windows, I was actually on top of the kids," he told Hall.
The crash left a huge hole in the doctor's office building, taking out a window and part of the brick exterior wall next to the front door.
The building did not collapse, but it was evacuated, and electricity was shut off, police said. The investigation into the crash continued late Tuesday afternoon.
