3-year-old dies after falling from 29th-floor window in East Harlem
NEW YORK -- A 3-year-old boy is dead after he fell out of a window from a high-rise building in East Harlem.
Neighbors told CBS2's Thalia Perez they are all grieving with the family.
"It's heartbreaking to everybody," neighbor Nelson Ortega said. "It's something strong. My kids, I've got love for kids, OK? Your kid is my kid."
"I'm grieving as well. I mean, I'm not sure who they are, but I mean, I feel like it's my own child as well," neighbor Ann Marie Vazquez said.
Cellphone video shared by a neighbor captured first responders on the scene at the Taino Towers on East 122nd Street and Third Avenue. Police say the 3-year-old boy fell out of a window on the 29th floor just after 11 a.m. Saturday.
The child was rushed to Harlem Hospital, where he sadly died.
Neighbors describe the child as a beautiful, sweet boy.
Nidia Cordero lives on the 34th floor.
"Suddenly, like, I would say maybe seven minutes later, you hear a big boom. I thought it was either something that fell," she said.
Moments later, she says she saw the unthinkable on the scaffolding below.
Neighbors say the scaffolding is there because construction is going on in the complex to modernize the buildings and is almost complete.
"We got four complex in this building, in Taino Towers, so right now, they just did three complex with new screens on the balcony," Ortega said.
CBS2 reached out to the complex's owner for comment but have not heard back.
The circumstances surrounding the child's fall remain unclear, and police are still investigating what led to this tragedy.
