4 Injured In Upper East Side Building Fire
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - Fire officials say four people have been injured, two seriously, in an early morning fire on Manhattan's Upper East Side.
A fire department spokesman says three civilians were injured. One was in critical condition and another was in serious condition with life-threatening injuries.
A third civilian and a firefighter suffered minor injuries.
Jim Smith was in Chopper2 over the scene of the fire at the six-story building on 78th Street between Second and First avenues.
The two-alarm fire, which began on the second floor around 5 a.m., caused lane closures on Second Avenue and closed 78th Street at Second Avenue, Smith reported.
The spokesman says the fire was brought under control by daybreak.
City Council Member Ben Kallos released a statement saying his thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. He also thanked first responders.
"Yet again, the FDNY have been our heroes, and the fire is under control," Kallos said. "Thanks to the FDNY for all they do to protect New Yorkers."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
