2 injured in crash near Columbia University; driver taken into custody

NEW YORK - Two people were injured Wednesday when a crash ended up on a sidewalk near Columbia University.

It happened around noon at West 114th Street and Broadway in Morningside Heights.

Police say the driver of a BMW struck a mini truck, then both vehicles jumped the curb.

The driver of the BMW was taken into custody.

The truck belonged to Columbia University facilities and operations.

"The person who was driving the SUV came out of the car and seemed to run away, but someone caught him pretty quickly," Columbia University student Jack Lobel said.

"I didn't see any pedestrians, thank God, because this is a street that's like, there's a lot of Columbia students always walking around there," student Guliette Guerard said.

"And class had just ended, so a lot of people were walking out," student Jaden Michael said.

"Could have been very bad," Guerard said.

Police sources say the two men inside the truck were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and are expected to be OK.

There's no word on the charges for the driver of the BMW.
