Former NYPD Officer Gets 25 Years For Killing Wife In Front Of 2 Children
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A former NYPD officer has been sentenced to 25 years in prison, after admitting to fatally shooting his wife in front of the couple's two young children because he thought she was having an affair.
Kevin Canty, of Queens, was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of his 40-year-old wife, Jessica.
Canty admitted he shot his wife seven times as their 6- and 9-year-old children watched, inside their home on 104th Street in Ozone Park, Queens, around 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2014.
First responders discovered Jessica Canty with gunshot wounds to her torso. She was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in cardiac arrest and pronounced dead a short time later.
Heidi Gamble was nearby when the shots rang out. She told 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten at the time that the children ran out of the house and into a nearby bodega.
"They came in screaming, crying, saying their dad just shot their mom and there's blood all over, please help," she said.
The 44-year-old Canty retired from the police department in 2013.
The couple had been together since they were teenagers and have a 20-year-old daughter, as well as the two children who witnessed the shooting.
