Wearable Tech, Group Training And Other Trends Could Help You Keep Your Fitness Resolution

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- If getting fit is one of your New Year's resolutions, there are tons of ways to do it.

As CBS2's Meg Baker explained, wearable technology is the hottest trend for the New Year, according to the American College of Sports Medicine's annual fitness trend forecast.

There's FitBit, which can be disguised as jewelry. The devices can be paired with your phones and tablets so that you can keep an eye on progress and make adjustments to your movement and diet as needed.

"It's metrics let you know what you are doing. You can set goals. It's a measurable way to increase your motivation and activity," Mario Godiva said.

The second most popular trend for 2016 was bodyweight training.

It uses minimal equipment because you are the equipment, making it more affordable. All you need is enough space for squats, pull-ups, and push-ups.

If you don't have much time try high intensity interval training. Short bursts followed by a short period of rest or recovery. You can get it done in 30 minutes or less.

"I love it. It's challenging. It's quick. You have high intensity and then get short breaks, recovery. It uses strength, it uses cardio. It's going to get both platforms in one," Michelle Parker said.

Ana Lawson uses it to relieve stress.

"From work, whoever drives you nuts. You slam that sand bell on top of his head. It's really a great workout. you sweat a lot so you burn a lot of calories," she said.

Also on the list was yoga. The popular practice is based on ancient traditions. It uses specific body postures to promote health and relaxation. It's great for your body and your mind.

If you can't get motivated you may need a personal trainer. More college students are majoring in kinesiology, and preparing themselves for careers in personal training.

"Helping you decide where you want to go, giving you info where you are starting with assessments, tracking your movement, and helping you through that," Equinox trainer Jordan Cogan explained.

Many trainers now incorporate body scans to outline a plan of action for weight loss.

"It gives us numbers in percentage of fat, bone, muscle, and water in a person. It measures it on an individual basis, and this is really cool for us as trainers to use to track a client's progress as opposed to just monitoring their weight alone," Equinox trainer, Kora-Lee Bruno said.

No matter what year it is there's no getting around the fact that all fitness trends should make you sweat.

You will also see group personal training in 2016, a personal trainer will work with you one-on-one, but in a small group of 2 to 4 people.
