2 William Paterson University Students Involved In Dismissed Sexual Assault Case Take School To Court
PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Two of the William Paterson University students who had sex assault charges against them dismissed last month say in court filings that the university has damaged their reputations.
A lawyer for Garrett Collick, of Paterson, Noah Williams, of Camden, and Collick's mother filed a tort claim against the university, its president, public safety director and others.
They allege the university failed to conduct a proper investigation and are seeking unspecified damages. Attorney Michael Epstein says he will decide whether to file a lawsuit after the state reviews the claim.
The claim names university president Kathleen Waldron and others. A spokeswoman says the university doesn't comment on legal matters.
As WCBS 880's Alex Silverman reported, the allegations were horrific. Court documents accused the students of blocking a dorm room door on the Wayne, New Jersey campus, turning off the lights, and demanding that she have sex with all five of them.
But last week, a grand jury declined to indict the five 18-year-old freshmen — including Jahmel Latimer, of Hoboken, Darius Singleton, of Jersey City and Tremaine Scott, of Vineland.
