2 hurt when parapet collapses into scaffold in Brooklyn

2 workers hurt in partial collapse at Brooklyn building

NEW YORK -- Two workers were hurt in a partial collapse at a Brooklyn building Tuesday afternoon.

It happened just before 2 p.m. at Stuyvesant Avenue and Greene Avenue in Bed-Stuy.

There's now a gap in the scaffolding surrounding the building because, according to the Department of Buildings, it was compromised when a 20-foot section of the parapet fell onto workers there.

The parapet is decorative molding on the façade of the building. That's what collapsed and hit the workers.

Sections of the scaffold were structurally compromised and now also need to be repaired.

The FDNY said the two workers truck were trapped under debris for 10-15 minutes. They are expected to survive, but were taken to Kings County Hospital in serious condition.

No pedestrians on the street were injured. The collapse appears to have been contained to the upper floors.

Back on Feb. 7, there was a complaint filed with the Department of Buildings that read, in part "doing construction work without a permit inside of the building in the apartments. The owner of the building construction workers that are not licensed."

"Just a very loud bang, I guess. I don't know. The floor shook a little bit," one resident said. "It sounded like a huge bundle of bricks hitting wood."

"We had two workers working on the scaffolding and the parapet collapsed on top of them," FDNY Battlion Chief Derek Harkan said. "They lifted up the debris and they pulled them out."

For now, the sidewalk in front of the building is closed. The DOB says the investigation is ongoing.

The resident said there have been repairs ongoing in the building.

We are trying to reach the building owner for comment.
