Police Investigate Drowning Deaths Of Two Men In Hudson River Off Of Hoboken
HOBOKEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) --A makeshift memorial has been erected along the waterfront in Hoboken, marking the spot where two young men lost their lives on Sunday morning.
Divers recovered the men around 8 a.m. in the water just off Sinatra Drive near the Stevens Institute of Technology, WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported.
Outside Hoboken police headquarters Sunday, Santos Morales told Miller and 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck that his 20-year-old brother Elias Serrano was one of the victims. He was from Newark and came to Hoboken to watch Saturday night's Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley fight on TV at a bar.
The second victim was identified on Sunday night, as 24-year-old Edwin Cruz, CBS 2's Scott Rapoport reported.
Friends flagged down the police and called 911 around 5:30 a.m. when the men fell into the water, Morales said.
"They always come out in groups and hang out together, but Hoboken is a new experience, I guess, for them," Morales said. "They wanted to see it, live it up up here."
The family remembered a hard-working young man who was in school for computer technology.
"Not a problematic kid at all," he said. "He's a pretty boy, I called him. He has the long, pretty hair. Just slim."
"We don't suspect of any ill will or anything. I think these guys maybe had a little bit too much to drink. Could've been anything."
Hoboken police, NYPD divers and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted in the search.
