2 Arrested, Charged After Skimming Device Found At Chase Bank In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two men have been arrested and charged for allegedly trying to steal people's banking information by planting a debit card skimmer on an ATM at a Chase bank in Brooklyn.

Authorities said the bank on Flatbush Avenue in Prospect Heights contacted police after suspecting that someone placed a skimming device on one of their ATMs, 1010 WINS reported.

On Tuesday, a police surveillance team was dispatched to the bank and observed two men who removed a door mounted Parabit card reader and cameras that were mounted onto the actual ATM machine, officials said.

Detectives quickly moved in and apprehended the pair while they were still inside the ATM vestibule.

Laurentiu Baies, 34, and Marcel Boariu, 36, both of whom are Romanian nationals, were charged with burglary, criminal possession of a forgery device, and criminal possession of a skimmer device.

Detective Robert Cimino, of the NYPD Financial Crimes Task Force,  said the two had only been in the United States for about a month when they were picked up Tuesday.

It is not clear how many - if any - cards were compromised by the devices.
