$1M Allocated For Brooklyn Sidewalk Extension To Protect Pedestrians, Seniors
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - City statistics show senior citizens are more likely to be hit by cars than any other age group.
Because of those statistics, changes are planned at some dangerous intersections in Brooklyn, WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported.
On Tuesday, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams unveiled a chalk outline where a sidewalk extension will be constructed in Borough Park.
"Instead of standing there hoping that the cars will see them, they can come all the way out here," he said.
He said the new addition will make the intersection safer.
"It gives the senior or disabled a head start to cross," Adams said.
As Haskell reported, the sidewalk will actually be extended about 6 feet from the curb.
"The shorter the distance to cross, makes it that much safer," one elderly man said.
Adams has allocated $1 million to build at least five of the sidewalk extensions.
"This may seem like a minor addition to many people, but it's not," Adams said.
