Brooklyn DA's Office Looks Into Deadly 1994 Police Shooting Of 13-Year-Old Boy
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Brooklyn man is still looking for justice, more than 21 years after his teenage son was shot and killed by a NYPD police officer.
"All of this is very painful for me," said Nicholas Heyward Sr., the father of 13-year-old Nicholas Heyward Jr. who was fatally shot by a housing officer in a stairwell at the Gowanus Houses on Sept. 27, 1994.
Now, Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson's civil rights unit is looking into the case.
"They said that they're going to proceed with it, almost as if it were a cold case," Heyward's attorney Roger Wareham said.
The younger Heyward had a plastic toy gun when he was shot, but Wareham notes it had an orange tip.
"This in no way resembles a real gun," Wareham said.
A spokesman for the district attorney said they are reviewing the initial investigation.
