NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Cash was raining down on the Long Island Expressway in Queens early Tuesday morning.

The bag broke on the roadway, sending $100 and $20 bills flying and drivers screeching to a halt before chasing the fluttering cash.

The bag contained $178,000. When it was all over, only $40 was recovered.

The incident is being investigated as either an inside job that went awry or a most unusual accident, Cornell reported.
