Woman Sentenced In Robbery Of 103-Year-Old Bronx Woman
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was sentenced Thursday for robbing a legally blind, 103-year-old Bronx woman while she was returning to her apartment earlier this year.
Sharon McNeil, 53, was sentenced to five years in prison with three years of post-release supervision after she pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery in September, Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said.
"Robbing an elderly person is cowardly and cold-hearted," Clark said. "The defendant now will serve a prison term for her callous actions."
On April 1, authorities said Louise Signore was on her way home from a local community center with two meals when McNeil followed her into her building on Bellamy Loop.
McNeil followed Signore onto the elevator and up to her floor, authorities said. Once in the hallway, McNeil knocked the centenarian down, stealing her purse and a shopping cart with the two meals, authorities said.
McNeil then fled the scene, but was seen on surveillance video and later arrested.
At the time of the incident, Signore said the robbery was "not going to stop me from going out."
