1010 WINS: MTA Calls Broken Rails A Common Occurrence
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Metropolitan Transportation Authority told 1010 WINS on Tuesday that broken rails in its subway system are a common occurrence.
The stunning admission comes just days after a subway train derailment in Woodside, Queens that injured 19 people, blamed preliminarily on a broken rail, 1010 WINS' Derricke Dennis reported.
The MTA said that those that break are fixed immediately, including one that broke Tuesday morning on the F Line -- the same line that was involved in the derailment on Friday.
Some commuters who spoke with Dennis were outraged by the news.
"That's a shame, because the MTA -- they make a lot of money," said straphanger Martha Roldan. "Come on, you believe that? If they break every day, what's that telling you?"
Others weren't fazed by the idea.
"I would imagine it's not really uncommon on other rail systems as well," said Williamsburg resident Jason Caylor.
"Because I have faith that everything will be fixed properly," Ely Kohls added.
The MTA said the type of rail break that happened Tuesday was not the same as the one that is believed to have caused the derailment on Friday.
The broken rail on Tuesday morning caused trains to be rerouted while the rail was fixed.
