10-Year-Old Boy Dead After Shooting Inside Newark Home, Police Say

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A 10-year-old boy is dead after being shot inside a home in Newark early Saturday, according to authorities.

Police were called to a multi-family home on the 800 block of South 19th Street around 1:20 a.m., where they found the boy bleeding from his chest. He had suffered an apparent gunshot wound, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's office.

He was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, at 1:48 a.m., prosecutors said.

As WCBS 880's Myles Miller reports, the victim's grandfather identified him as Josiah Coleman.

Josiah lived in Pennsylvania, but visited his father in Newark's South Ward on the weekends, his grandfather said.

Neighbors tell CBS2 about five people lived inside the home where police believe the shooting occurred.

The boy's grandfather says he showed up after police had cordoned off the block.

"He was a good boy," Clarence Coleman told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern.

Neighbors told CBS2 it was hard to watch as the boy was taken away in an ambulance.

"It's sad," said witness and neighbor Erique Addison. "I don't know what the situation was, but seeing that little boy like that -- it was rough."

The boy's family maintains there were no guns inside the home.

Details of what led up to the shooting had not been released late Saturday afternoon. No arrests have been made, according to prosecutors.
