Police: Gunman in deadly Ramapo shooting dies by suicide

RAMAPO, N.Y. -- Police in Rockland County, New York, say a suspect who shot and killed a 56-year-old woman at her home Wednesday has died by suicide.

Ramapo Police officers were sent to a home on Inwood Drive in the Hillcrest section just before 9 a.m. for a report of gunshots and a woman laying on the ground.

Police say the 56-year-old woman had been shot multiple times and was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

According to police, the suspect, identified as 53-year-old Lawrence Byrd, was spotted in Stamford, Connecticut, on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say when officers approached Byrd, he shot himself. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The relationship between Byrd and the woman who was killed is unclear at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
