1 Dead, 3 Hurt After Car Crashes Into Nassau County Home

PLAINVIEW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A young woman is dead and three other people were hurt after an out-of-control car smashed into a Nassau County home early Sunday.

As CBS2's Dave Carlin reported, all four people were inside the car that slammed into the home around 4 a.m. Sunday.

They were in a 2004 Acura headed east on Round Swamp Road in Plainview when it left the road and struck the home.

The driver and two occupants escaped the car they were riding in, but a female passenger just 19 years old did not make it out of the wreckage alive.

"I think this is very terrible tragedy you know, that this occurred – and a loss of life," one woman said.

Investigators believe the car was speeding on Old Country Road when the male driver hung a right hand turn on to Round Swamp Road and careening across three lanes and a grassy median -- then taking out a sign and clipping a tree before hitting this home so hard it caused significant structural damage.

There were family members inside the home, including kids. They were not hurt.

Later Sunday, building inspectors were on the scene checking out the home. Family members were told they could not go back inside.

When the family members returned to pick up some belongings with officer escorts, they declined to be interviewed.

Neighbors said they are hoping this moves drivers to slow down.

"That's crazy," said neighbor Shula Bashkin. "It shouldn't come to this point."

Bashkin said her daughter woke up to hear chaos outside her window.

"She said heard a big bang like about 4:30 a.m. and then she heard some screaming," she said.

Homeowners maneuvered around the shut-down road, All day and into the night, the major thoroughfare of Round Swamp Road was out of action.

"It's an inconvenience for the day, but someone died and three people are injured -- and maybe this house can't be occupied -- so in the scheme of things, I will deal with it," said Merg Bazhdari.

The 19-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The three survivors are expected to be recover fully.

No timetable was given by building inspectors for when repairs will be finished to the home so family members can live in here again.

Police late Sunday had not released the name of the teenager who was killed, and no charges had been filed in connection with the crash.

Nassau detectives ask anyone with information regarding this auto accident to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
