1 dead, 2 others hurt in shooting in Chelsea

NEW YORK -- One person is dead and two others are hospitalized after a triple shooting in Chelsea.

It happened around 11 p.m. Saturday on West 25th Street between 10th and 11th avenues, close to the High Line. Police are still investigating what led up to the shooting.

As CBS2's Zinnia Maldonado reports, neighbors are surprised to hear of the deadly violence so close to home.

The NYPD says right outside 541 West 25th St., 42-year-old Rasithamar Grant was shot multiple times. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A 32-year-old woman was shot in the leg, and a 37-year-old man was shot multiple times in both legs. The two victims were taken to nearby hospitals and are in stable condition.

The shooting shut down the entire area surrounding West 25th Street as officers spoke to witnesses right outside the Lavan 541 event venue.

It's unknown if the shooting was tied to an event taking place that evening.

Residents told Maldonado they're familiar with different events going on in the neighborhood but never any violence.

One woman said she was able to hear the gunshots ringing out from inside her apartment.

"We just heard, I think it was like five or six really loud gunshots in a row, and it was very obvious ... Just horrifying, actually, that I heard someone get killed. I mean, I knew I had heard somebody get shot, but then to learn that somebody didn't survive, it's pretty terrifying," she said.

"I was walking my dog around 9:45 and everything just seemed business as usual, but then something must have gone awry," one man said.

Police say no arrests have been made as the investigation is ongoing.
