Suspect in critical condition after car chase, police-involved shooting in the Bronx

NEW YORK -- A car chase turned shootout unfolded by the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx during the overnight hours.

Officers tried to arrest two men in a stolen car. One of them exchanged gunfire with officers while attempting to escape and was hit.

Police said the chain of events began around 11:45 p.m., when members of the 30th Precinct received a call about a car break-in. While responding, they noticed another car driving recklessly, ran the plates, found out it was stolen, and started to pursue. The chase led them to 161st Street and Summit Avenue in Highbridge, where officers arrested one man while the other took off running across the pedestrian bridge, CBS2's Christina Fan reported Sunday.

"At this point, members of the 30 Precinct engage this person in an exchange of gunfire. The individual walks to the marsh area right here next to the Major Deegan and a second round of gunfire exchange occurs," NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said.

Police say 10 minutes passed between the two bouts of gunfire. The suspect was hit and officers brought him to the side of the highway, where they provided medical aid. At least three officers discharged their weapons, but none were injured.

"Although gun violence is down in the city, events like this still occur and our members are found in peril. We're asking our communities to continuously partner with us because we know we still need to reduce gun violence in our city," NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said.

Police recovered two guns believed to have been in the suspect's possession. They said the suspect is 39 years old and known to the department. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition.
