3 victims in serious-but-stable condition

Dozens of people were hurt when a school bus crashed and overturned in the Bronx on Thursday morning.

It happened just after 6 a.m. on the Hutchinson River Parkway Exit 1A ramp in the Throggs Neck section of the borough, CBS2's Nick Caloway reported.

Sources say the driver told police he tried to cut across from the middle lane after realizing he was passing the exit. Investigators believe that sharp turn caused the bus to overturn. No criminality is suspected.

Luckily, there were no children on board the bus and most of those injuries are minor. Some were taken to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment.

Chopper 2 showed the chaos on the ground after the bus overturned on the Hutchinson River Parkway on a northbound ramp to Bruckner Boulevard.

Dozens of first responders raced to the scene, prepared for the worst.

"Obviously, a school bus, the concern is children," one first responder said.

All 41 people on board were adults. Some were being evaluated in the grass after they escaped the wreckage.

All of the passengers were placed in ambulances and taken to either Jacobi or Lincoln hospitals. Three of the victims were in serious-but-stable condition.

The driver refused medical attention.

Officials said the passengers were all bus drivers for the city's summer programming, being shuttled from one location to another.

Families can expect that some bus routes on Thursday afternoon will be delayed and schools will be reaching out to those whose routes are impacted.

The NYPD is now investigating the crash. The driver tested negative for alcohol.
