NYPD: Suspect shot after officer struck by SUV in Brooklyn

NEW YORK -- Police shot and injured a driver early Saturday morning in Brooklyn after they say the driver struck an officer with his SUV.

The NYPD said officers approached a vehicle that appeared to have been involved in an accident with two other cars at the intersection of Meeker and Vandervort in Williamsburg just before 4 .m. Police said the officers asked the driver and his passengers to exit the vehicle and after about a minute the driver instead hit the gas and struck an officer with his SUV, CBS2's Thalia Perez reported.

"The white car decides to flee, striking one of our officers, who subsequently discharged his firearm three times into that vehicle," NYPD Deputy Chief John Chell said.

Police say there is body cam video and two officers fired their weapons, adding the officer was thrown across the street when the SUV slammed into him. He suffered an injury to his leg and knee.

"About 20 minutes after, a male, 21, arrives a Wyckoff Hospital with one gunshot wound to his chest. We believe, at the time, he is the driver of that white vehicle," Chell said.

Police say minutes before the shooting they responded to a 911 call of shots fired nearby at the intersection of Broadway and Lorimer, adding when officers arrived at the scene three cars were speeding through a red light.

Police are still searching for the vehicle and additional suspects.
