Suffolk County Police: 2 officers stabbed on Long Island, suspect killed

Two Suffolk County Police officers are recovering after they were stabbed while responding to a 911 call on Long Island on Wednesday.

Police say the knife-wielding man was later shot and killed by officers.

Suffolk County Police shared an update on the officers' condition overnight. 

They say two remain hospitalized -- one in serious condition, the other in stable. 

A third has been treated and released. 

Neighbors in the Suffolk County neighborhood are disturbed by the details of what unfolded Wednesday evening.

"Shocking. Really, it's shocking," said Gloria Santos.

Police say a case worker showed up for a wellness check on two people living in an apartment or condo on Birchwood Road. Around 5 p.m., the case worker called 911.

"One of the residents was acting violent towards the other," Suffolk County Police Chief of Detectives John Rowan said.

Rowan says Suffolk County police responded to the call, and when they got there, that violent resident took out a knife and stabbed two officers.

Rowan says police shot and killed the person who attacked them.

"One officer received a significant stab wound, and he was airlifted to Stony Brook Medical Center," he said.

Rowan says the second officer who was stabbed was also rushed to Stony Brook, and doctors are treating a third officer who suffered minor injuries.

"They've been causing problems for the last eight months," said Maria Dawm, who lives in the complex.

Dawm says she and a neighbor have both gotten into arguments with a man who lives at the address where the attack happened.

"You knew that he was alarming individual," she said.

Dawm says neighbors have complained to management and police about the people living in the home and even suspected them of vandalism around the property.

"We didn't expect this. We didn't know what was gonna happen, but it just escalated and escalated and escalated, and it was bound, something like this, to happen," she said.

There's no word yet on the condition of the officers who were stabbed. Police have said the officers have "serious physical injuries."

Police say a man who allegedly stabbed two officers was shot and killed in Medford on Wednesday.

It happened around 5 p.m.

Suffolk County Police Chief of Detectives John Rowan says officers were sent to an apartment building on Birchwood Road in response to a 911 call from a case worker who was checking on two residents and said one resident was acting violent toward another.

When officers arrived, they encountered a man armed with a knife who then allegedly stabbed two officers.

At least one officer then opened fire on the suspect and fatally shot him.

Rowan says one officer suffered a "significant" stab wound and was airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital. The second officer was taken to Stony Brook Hospital by ambulance.

A third officer was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. It's unclear how he was hurt.

The investigation is ongoing.

Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. released the following statement in response to Wednesday's stabbing:

"Our thoughts are with the Suffolk County Police Department Officers that were injured tonight while responding to a 911 call. This a reminder that the brave men and women in law enforcement put their lives on the line every day. The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office stands with the SCPD and their families during this time."

Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association President Noel DiGerolamo released a statement in response to Wednesday's stabbing:

"We are thankful that the two Suffolk County Police Officers injured in today's incident are in critical but stable condition at this time.   We are incredibly grateful for the outstanding care provided by Dr. Vosswinkel and the staff at Stony Brook University Medical Center.  We ask that all Long Islanders keep our Officers in their thoughts and prayers, and God willing, they will make a full recovery from the horrific incident that took place earlier today."
