Bomb squad clears suspicious package at John F. Kennedy International Airport, evacuated terminal reopens

NEW YORK -- There was quite a scare at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Sunday.

Terminal 4 had to be evacuated after a bomb-sniffing dog spotted an unattended bag, CBS2's Kevin Rincon reported.

The bag in question had a household product that contains an explosive component the dogs are trained to detect, officials said.

The security scare created a chaotic scene outside the terminal, as hundreds lined the sidewalk. The incident impacted passengers not just here, but all across the airport.

"When the alarm went off in Terminal 1, no one moved. No one did anything," said Cameron Dasher, who was traveling to Peru. "I was just concerned. I didn't know what was going on. I just wanted to know."

That traveler, along with many others, was left wondering what was going on. It wasn't until about noon that things went back to normal.

"I was waiting inside for more than hour. She's sitting inside, but I don't know for how long," one person said.

That man was here trying to pick up family, among them a cancer patient who traveled from eastern Europe.

The bomb squad was called out as part of the response and as it worked inside the terminal, traffic leading to the airport was at a standstill as cops blocked everything off.

The one positive is that delays and cancellations are currently at a minimum. There's a steady flow of people coming and going despite the mess that was seen earlier in the day.
