Woman, infant among 8 injured in Bronx house fire

NEW YORK -- Eight people, including a mother and her infant, were hurt in a house fire early Friday morning in the Morrisania section of the Bronx. 

Firefighters had to break through a second-floor window to rescue them. 

First responders rushed two adults and an infant to awaiting ambulances after rescuing them from a burning home at 1243 Tinton Avenue just after 6 a.m. 

"Devastating to see, of course, a mother and child were brought out on stretchers," said neighbor Wanda Singletary. "The baby wasn't crying or anything and the mother, looked like to me, they were giving her CPR." 

Fire officials said a 25-year-old woman and an infant are in critical condition and fighting for their lives in the hospital. Neighbors said they were asleep on the second floor and had to be pulled out of a back bedroom. 

"It was like and 8-month-old baby and all of that. I hope they all good," said Ishmael Singletary. "That was very, very, very dangerous." 

A 65-year-old man was also rescued and is being treated for smoke inhalation. 

"I heard the man screaming, and when I went to my bedroom window I saw the fire," Wanda Singletary added. 

The calls for help got her attention. She called 911 and shot cellphone video of the home engulfed with thick smoke and flames. 

Five EMS workers were also hurt. They have a base nearby and were first on the scene. 

"The EMS station is in close proximity. Those guys did a great job in directing fire units, letting the fire units know there there were trapped civilians," said FDNY Deputy Chief Brian Shovlin. 

More than 100 firefighters responded.

Investigators with the fire marshal's office were in and out of the home all Friday afternoon trying to figure out how the fire started.
