Dr. Jon LaPook: Q&A on Zika, DEET and pregnancy
With more than 20 locally-transmitted cases of Zika now reported in South Florida, many people -- especially pregnant women -- are worried about how to combat the mosquitoes that spread the disease.
Zika can cause devastating birth defects, so it's important for mothers-to-be to protect themselves. Experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the EPA say mosquito repellents with DEET are effective and safe, but some pregnant women are wary of the chemicals.
"DEET has been around more than 50 years, and it's had a very safe profile," said CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook. He dug into what the scientific research does -- and doesn't -- show about DEET and pregnancy, and addressed safety questions in a Facebook Live chat. Watch the video below for more:
