Are the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus waterproof?
Neither rain nor sleet will stop Apple's new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. At least that's what YouTube user Zach Straley claims, after posting two videos showing the new phones being submerged in water, then working perfectly.
In the first video, Straley submerges the phones in two separate bowls of water for an hour each. He pulls them out after a half-hour, 45 minutes, and then at the end of the 60-minute mark. During each break, he checks to see if the phones work and whether he can use various features like the camera.
"I don't know what Apple did with these new iPhone 6ses," Straley said at the end of the video, "but they're holding up extremely well."
In the second video, he checks in with the phones 48 hours after he put them under water.
Was there any damage on the apparently durable phones? Straley found only one single diagonal line running across the top of the 6s's screen. Other than that, the YouTube poster found no other damage, demonstrating that everything from the phones' charging ports to the Touch ID feature to the headphone jacks -- things that many of his viewers were curious about -- were unaffected by the water.
Despite the videos, there has been no official word from Apple that its latest phones are designed to be waterproof. Apple did not respond to our partners at CNET for comment.
"It really is great for something that Apple didn't even advertise as being waterproof or even water resistant," Straley said at the end of the second video.
And it may be a boon for iPhone owners caught in a downpour, but it's probably not advisable to go dunking your phone just for the fun of it. Without a guarantee from the company, you'll be left hanging should the experiment go south. Apple's website states, "Service for the liquid damage to an iPhone or iPod isn't covered by the Apple one-year limited warranty or an AppleCare Protection Plan (APP)."
