YouTube video shows gun spontaneously fire
In April 2014, Remington issued a voluntary recall for over 1.3 million Model 700 rifles with a trigger mechanism known as the X-Mark Pro. A few months earlier, an alarming YouTube video had gone viral in which a garage experiment, conducted by a Model 700 owner, showed a potentially deadly defect: his rifle could fire without its trigger being pulled in cold weather.
Although Remington has fixed its Model 700 trigger problem, it is estimated that only 1 in 4 guns affected by the recall have been turned in. Nearly a million are still out there.
This week on 60 Minutes, Lesley Stahl examines the Remington controversy and the families it’s affected on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
