U.S. ambassador's delicious World Cup bet: pancakes v. waffles
Ahead of the United States' high-stakes World Cup game against Belgium on Tuesday, U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom Matthew Barzun decided to offer up a friendly wager against Guy Trouveroy, the Belgian Ambassador to the U.K.
In a handwritten note sent to Trouveroy on Tuesday, Barzun said that if Belgium wins, he will cook American pancakes for Trouveroy and his team at the Belgian embassy. If the U.S. wins, Barzun suggested that Trouveroy cook Belgian waffles at the U.S. embassy.
Barzun capped off his note with the chant that American fans have adopted: "Best of luck! May the best team win... but I believe, I believe that we will win!"
Earlier this year, the U.S. had to make good on its wager with Canada during the Olympics -- after two heartbreaking losses to Canada's hockey teams, President Obama sent the Canadian embassy two cases of White House-brewed beer.
