Woman found dead in S.C. woods treated as homicide

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Authorities in central South Carolina are investigating the death of a woman found by a road in a wooded area in Lower Richland County, CBS affiliate WLTX reports.

Sgt. Kevin Lawrence of the Richland County Sheriff's Department says deputies Sunday found an unoccupied, unlocked vehicle with keys inside parked in the middle of a road in Hopkins.

When deputies did not find anyone in the vehicle, they had it towed. Approximately 20-30 minutes later, when the sun came up, deputies said they searched the area and found an unresponsive female victim.

She was transported to the local hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the station said.

The sheriff's department is investigating and has ruled the case a homicide.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
