Florida man charged in '97 Indiana slaying, bank robbery case

KEWANNA, Ind. -- DNA evidence has led to charges against a Florida man for the 1997 slaying of a northern Indiana man and bank robbery.

Indiana State Police said Friday they've served a warrant alleging murder, robbery and theft against 52-year-old William Stinemetz of Palm City, Florida. Stinemetz is currently incarcerated in Martin County, Florida, on charges in that state.

Police allege Stinemetz killed 69-year-old Lawrence Pfeiffer of Kewanna, then used the victim's car while robbing the Indiana Lawrence Bank in the same town 45 miles south of South Bend. Stinemetz, then allegedly returned the car to Pfeiffer's home and fled in a different vehicle. Pfeiffer's body was found nearly two hours after the bank robbery.

Police say a DNA profile matched Stinemetz last month.

It wasn't clear whether Stinemetz has an attorney.
