She passed away "as a result of complications from hip surgery," the statement noted. She is survived by her husband, her five children, three step-children, eight grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, and thirteen step-great grandchildren.

Born in Chicago on June 21, 1931 to Clem B. and Marion Mulholland, Maryan "worked as a dietician" and she graduated from St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana, the statement noted. She married Justice Stevens in Leesburg, Virginia on December 1, 1979.

"A private interment service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery," the release added.

Stevens was appointed by former President Gerald Ford, a Republican, in 1975, but he emerged as one of the most progressive members of the court during his time on the bench. He retired in 2010 and was replaced by current Associate Justice Elena Kagan.
