Watch a Grand Canyon lightning strike in slow motion
The Grand Canyon gets its share of stormy weather in the summer but rarely has it been caught on camera like this.
On its twitter feed, the Grand Canyon National Park posted this video of a lightning strike.
The video posted Sunday came just hours after the park tweeted that the area had been hit by a storm with pea-sized hail. The park service also joked on the twitter feed that the pounding rain and lighting "might help our traffic."
Lightning is a frequent visitor to the Grand Canyon thanks to summer thunderstorms that can pose hazards to visitors. In a typical year, lightning strikes tens of thousands of times in the park that is 18 miles wide, a mile deep and features 277 river miles. It also has been known to experience other freaky weather, including once filling with clouds.
