Vox Media to buy Re/code
Vox Media said Tuesday that it's buying technology news publisher Re/code, adding to its growing stable of online properties.
Re/code was started by veteran journalists Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg, both formerly of The Wall Street Journal. They launched Re/code in 2014 after leaving the newspaper.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Vox owns tech news site The Verge and video-gaming site Polygon, along with digital outlets including Curbed, Eater, Racked and SB Nation.
Swisher and Mossberg will remain with Re/code after the transaction closes. The site will continue to publish at Recode.net.
"This combination will give us access to the new tools and talent we need and want to make Re/code stronger and better," Swisher said in a statement.
Despite its strong reputation as a source of tech news and analysis, Re/code has struggled to expand its readership in a media industry landscape dominated by larger players. In April Re/code had 1.5 million unique visitors to its site, compared with 12 million for The Verge, according to The Associated Press.
