House votes canceled, hearings postponed following shooting at GOP baseball practice

Votes in the House have been canceled Wednesday following a shooting at a congressional baseball practice for the Republican team in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside of Washington.

The office of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana, who was among at least four people shot, said in a notice that "no votes are expected in the House today."

Asked if the Senate will also cancel its votes, a spokesman in Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn's, R-Texas, office told CBS News there are "no scheduling announcements at this time."

Several news conferences and committee hearings were also canceled Wednesday. A Senate Appropriations Committee hearing, for example, on President Trump's 2018 budget focused on Capitol Police has been postponed. No makeup date or time for a rescheduled hearing was announced.

A press conference that had been scheduled by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut and Rep. John Conyers, D-Michigan, has been postponed. They were planning to highlight a complaint filed by nearly 200 lawmakers against Mr. Trump.

All members of the House will attend a briefing scheduled by Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving for 11:15 a.m. Wednesday to discuss the shooting

The gunman carried out his attack with a rifle. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot in the hip, and his office says he is undergoing surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The wounded include the gunman, two Capitol Police officers and a staffer for Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas. Williams was not injured in the incident, his office said in a statement.

Alexandria's Chief of Police Michael Brown said five people were transported from the scene for medical reasons, but he wouldn't provide details on their conditions.
