Video: San Antonio high school football player shoves referee

A San Antonio high school football player was caught on camera apparently shoving a referee during a game just two weeks after a similar incident in the same city grabbed the international spotlight.

CBS affiliate KENS-TV reports the apparent aggressor was St. Anthony football player senior Zeke Cardenas, a senior, and that he shoved the official following a second penalty in Saturday's game against Austin Hyde Park.

Cardenas was immediately restrained by his teammates after he raised his arms up and made contact with the ref, and was then ejected from the game.

Hyde Park coach Dean Campbell, who was not at the game as he was recovering from a heart attack, told KENS: "Whatever happened was unfortunate, especially with whatever happened last week in Marble Falls. I spoke with the coaches after the game and I didn't really ask them what all they saw."

In the earlier incident, two John Jay High School football players who appear to have deliberately tackled a referee during a game were suspended from school and the team.

One of the players is seen on video running into the back of the referee as he watched a play, and the other dove into the official. Both took running starts.

It happened in Marble Falls, Texas, during a 15-9 win by the home team. Before the referee was hit, two Jay players had been ejected on separate plays.

Marble Falls coach Matt Green said John Jay coach Gary Gutierrez apologized after the game.

"I've coached 14 years and I've never seen anything like it," Green told the San Antonio Express-News.

The referee was "very upset" and "wanting to press charges," Austin Football Officials Association secretary Wayne Elliott told the AP.

Elliott said he was seeking guidance from the state officials association, adding, "The first thing we want is that those two kids never play football again."

The players claim the ref directed racial slurs at them.
