U.S. has video of captured American soldier
WASHINGTON -- U.S. officials say they have received a new video of captured U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl that it believed to have been filmed sometime last month, CBS News correspondent David Martin reports.
In the video, Bergdahl looks gaunt and unwell and appears visibly shaken, Martin reports.
CBS News has learned the video was made around December
2013. U.S. intelligence has been aware of it for some time and Bergdah's family was informed of its existence on Tuesday.
U.S. officials believed that Bergdahl was being held by the Haqqani Network, an Islamist insurgent group that operates on both sides of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. It is not clear whether he is still in their custody or has been turned over to another group, such as the Taliban.
The Haqqani Network is allied with the Taliban, and the Taliban have said they would free Bergdahl in exchange for several of their most senior operatives who are being detained at the U.S. detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The new video is not the first
proof that Bergdahl is still alive, but it is the first in some time.
In a statement issued through the Idaho National Guard, Bergdahl's family called the video "very important to us and our resolve to continue our efforts to bring Bowe home as soon as possible."
The family urged Bergdahl's captors “to release him safely so that our only son can be reunited with his mother and father."
