United Airlines flight diverted due to "possible security concern"

A United Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey to San Diego was diverted to Denver late Wednesday night due to what the carrier called a “possible security concern.”

The FBI’s Denver office, which was called in, told CBS News a passenger on United Flight 1243 spotted a device the passenger thought might be suspicious, prompting the diversion.

Passengers were bussed from the plane to the concourse, the agency said.

Denver police responded and did a full investigation, then the flight was cleared and deemed safe -- the device was harmless, the FBI said.

Passengers were loaded back onto the plane.

No one was taken into custody.
