Uber driver vs. bicyclist in San Francisco road rage collision
SAN FRANCISCO - An Uber driver is accused of running down and seriously injuring a bicyclist in an apparent road-rage incident in San Francisco.
Police arrested Emerson Decarvalho, 38, on Sunday in the city's Fisherman's Wharf area, a major tourist destination. Police say Decarvalho and the bicyclist got embroiled in a dispute about 1 p.m. as they traveled in the same direction.
"The bicyclist rode up to the Uber vehicle passenger side and began yelling at the driver and banging on his window, swearing at him and pushed his mirror in," San Francisco Police Department officer Albie Esparza said. "During this exchange, the bicyclist sped up and the vehicle also sped up, striking the back of the bike."
Esparza said the 45-year-old bicyclist was knocked unconscious and suffered a punctured lung, and broken ribs and clavicle.
Decarvalho, a Daly City resident, remained on the scene and was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Esparza said Decarvalho didn't have a passenger at the time of the incident. Decarvalho remains jailed, and it's unclear if he's represented by an attorney.
"Our thoughts are with the victim of this terrible incident,"a spokeswoman for Uber said Monday. "We are gathering more information and will assist the authorities in their investigation."
The company connects drivers to riders through a mobile app.
