Two teens arrested in mob attack on driver who hit boy

DETROIT - Police have arrested two teenage boys in connection with the brutal beating of a man who accidentally struck a boy with his pickup truck on Detroit's east side last week, reports CBS Detroit.

A 16-year-old and a 17-year-old boy were taken into custody Saturday morning in connection with the incident, authorities say.

The 17-year-old, Bruce Wimbush, Jr., of Detroit, is charged as an adult with assault with intent to murder and assault with intent to do great bodily harm, according to the station. The 16-year-old is scheduled to appear before a juvenile referee, and it could take up to five days to determine whether or not he will be charged as an adult in the case. He is being held in a juvenile detention center.

Steven Utash, 54, remains in critical condition, under a medically induced coma after being viciously attacked by 10 to 12 men on April 2. The attack happened after Utash struck an 11-year-old boy who stepped in front of his pickup truck, police say. Utash stopped immediately to check on the boy but was attacked by a violent mob before he had a chance to even reach the child, who suffered a broken leg, according to the station.

Sgt. Michael Woody said Utash was not at fault for the accident.

"Our preliminary investigation shows the child stepped in front of his vehicle. [Utash] did exactly the right thing. He stopped his vehicle, he got out and he tried to render aid to a small child. He did exactly what he was supposed to do. It was an accident," Woody said. "At this point, based on [Utash's] condition, there's some pretty serious charges that we're looking at."

Police are still searching for additional suspects, according to the station.

Utash's family has set up an online fundraiser to help pay for his medical bills. Less than 24 hours after the effort started, more than $60,000 had been raised.
