Trump praises McGahn as a "really good guy"

Trump announces departure of White House counsel Don McGahn

President Trump had only words of praise for White House counsel Don McGahn, who, Mr. Trump tweeted Wednesday, will be leaving his job this fall.

Mr. Trump told reporters during a roundtable session about a drug-free communities program that McGahn is a "really good guy" and has been with him "a really long time." He added that he has "a lot of affection for Don" and believes he's done "an excellent job."

The president also said he approved of McGahn's extensive interviews with special counsel Robert Mueller's team and that he was not concerned about McGahn's interviews with prosecutors.

"We do everything straight. We do everything by the book," Mr. Trump said.

McGahn, who has had a front row seat in Trump administration controversies and accomplishments, will be leaving in the fall following the Senate confirmation vote for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, Mr. Trump announced on Twitter Wednesday morning.

The departure of Mr. Trump's White House counsel will create a vacancy in an office that has been closely involved in the conflict over special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.
