"True Detective" unveils two new heart-pounding trailers

The second season of HBO's addicting crime drama "True Detective," that last summer brought Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson together as scruffy, brooding southern detectives, will return in just two weeks with a whole new cast and concept.

The network released two new trailers this weekend for the upcoming season, which promise all the same darkness with added suspense, and a touch of glamour. A reluctant Colin Farrell as Los Angeles detective Ray Velacro is thrust into a murder investigation, which finds Vince Vaughn, a criminal named Frank Semyon, as a primary suspect. Frank is being pursued by two other detectives: Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) and Taylor Kitsch, who portrays motorcycle cop Paul Woodrugh.

One of the two trailers, called "Stand," is a heart-pounding montage of building suspense, while the other, "Chaos," provides a peek at the characters' "compromised" situation.

Farrell said the second round of "True Detective " has a decidedly different structure but similar motif to the first season.

"There are four main characters, as opposed to the two-character structure that's in the first piece," Farrell said to AceShowbiz.

"But it's a lot of the same sensibilities, and a lot of the characters are struggling with the same kind of existential quandaries and questions that are related to meaning and purpose and the burying of the darkness that may be in your past."

"Fast and Furious" and "Star Wars" creator Justin Lin will direct the first two episodes, and Danish filmmaker Janus Metz Pedersen ("Armadillo") is on board for episode 3.

The new season of "True Detective" premieres Sunday, June 21 on HBO.
