Witnesses describe fatal hit-and-run after car rams pedestrians
SALT LAKE CITY – Police here were seeking the driver of a car that plowed into a group of people on a sidewalk in the downtown area Tuesday evening, leaving at least one person dead, reports CBS Salt Lake City affiliate KUTV.
Police said it happened outside the Road Home shelter, where homeless people are known to congregate, across from Gateway Mall.
Witnesses told KUTV a car went off the road, hit a group of people, then the female driver got out and ran off.
One witness said the woman was on her phone and pedestrians had yelled at her to pay attention to the road seconds before the crash.
Police confirm six people were struck by the beige Mazda 6. Of the victims one person has died.
Police were asking for the public's help in their search for the driver.
