Tom Hanks tweets college senior: "I found your student ID"

Tom Hanks returns student's ID

Here is the story of lost and found -- starring a Hollywood legend with a reputation as an all around upstanding guy, and a Fordham University senior who was quite excited.

Habitual good Samaritan Tom Hanks found a college student ID card belonging to a woman named Lauren. He didn't say where, but it was presumably in Central Park where the Fordham University senior routinely does her Pilates.

Hanks knew just how to reach her, on his massively popular Twitter page.

As CBS2's Dave Carlin reported, Hanks covered her last name and sent out a tweet.

"Lauren! I found your student ID in the park. If you still need it my office will get to you. Hanx."

On Tuesday, CBS2's Alice Gainer found Lauren -- Fordham University senior Lauren Whitmore to be exact.

Whitmore, who is a performance artist, is now a little bit famous in a flash.

"I don't have a Twitter, but one of my professors emailed me with a link to Twitter and said, 'you're famous,'" she said.

Whitmore said she was out running in Central Park on Monday when she must have dropped the card.

"It was ironic, I was thinking about it, you know I was out for a run, Forrest -- I don't know," she said.

Her remark, of course, is a reference to Hanks' role in "Forrest Gump."

"I have not spoken to Tom Hanks personally, if he has my ID and would like to give it back I will surely meet him to do that," she said.

Especially since she spent $20 to get a new ID printed.

Fordham students hope she gets a face to face with the Oscar winner.

"I'd be a little embarrassed," Shayan Artuz said, "I hate my ID picture, but if Tom Hanks found it I can't really complain."

Hanks made a social media splash in March after one of his credit cards went missing.

A thoughtful New Yorker found his credit card and returned it to the star, prompting Hanks to tweet a public thank you. Again, he spelled Hanks with an X on the end.

"A guy named Tony found my credit card on the street in NYC and returned it! Tony! You make this city even greater! Thanks. HANX."

Proof that castaway credit cards and IDs get Hollywood endings in the Big Apple.

Hanks stars in the upcoming Cold War thriller "Bridge of Spies."
