Tim Cook: 15 million people listening to Apple Music

Taking stock of Apple Music

Not quite fourth months in, Apple Music has 15 million people streaming songs and radio shows, Apple CEO Tim Cook said Monday.

Speaking at The Wall Street Journal's WSJDLive technology conference in Laguna Beach, Calif., Cook said that there are 6.5 million people paying for monthly subscriptions to the service and another 8.5 million currently enjoying free three-month trials.

A one-month subscription costs $9.99 or $14.99 for a family plan. When Apple Music launched June 30, the company offered three months free.

Spotify, the top player in the streaming game, has over 2o million subscribers -- that's three times as many people paying the same amount for commercial-free music. It claims over 75 million total users. The service launched in 2008.

Meanwhile, Tidal -- which Jay Z recently forgot he owned -- launched a couple months before Apple Music and hit the 1 million mark at the end of September.
