Tim Burton: "Beetlejuice" sequel is close to happening

"Beetlejuice" could be back in theaters thanks to Tim Burton.

The director of the 1988 film, starring Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Winona Ryder and Geena Davis, spoke about a possible sequel with IGN while promoting his new movie, "Big Eyes," starring Amy Adams.

Burton said a "Beetlejuice" sequel is "closer than ever," stressing that it all comes down to Keaton's involvement.

"There's only one Beetlejuice, and that's Michael. There is a script, and I would love to work with him again. I think there is now a better chance than ever," Burton said. "I miss that character. There's something that's cathartic and amazing about it. I think it's closer than ever."

Batman to Birdman: Michael Keaton on his career and comeback role

Buzz about a "Beetlejuice" follow-up has been heating up over the past year. In October 2013, it was revealed that Burton had entered negotiations with Warner Bros. to direct "Beetlejuice 2."

Keaton, meanwhile, has received a lot of critical acclaim for his new movie "Birdman," which is already up for Golden Globes Awards and is poised to receive Oscar nominations, too.

After all that excitement settles down, maybe Keaton will sign on for another dose of "Beetlejuice."
