3 people dead, 3 deputies injured after shootout at NC home
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Three people are dead following a shootout with police officers at a North Carolina home Wednesday morning, reports CBS affiliate WRAL.
Cumberland County deputies responded to a home outside Fayetteville around 7 a.m. after receiving a call about a domestic dispute, according to the station. The nature of the incident is unclear.
Deputies exchanged fire with someone at the scene, who was killed. Three officers were wounded in the shooting as well, the station reports.
Two unidentified people were also killed, though authorities did not say if their deaths were related to the domestic dispute or the subsequent shootout with deputies. No names have been released.
Jermal Epps told WRAL that he saw a man who fired at the deputies. "I looked out the window and noticed a guy unloading a clip into that trailer next door," he said. "We stood outside a little bit to make sure everyone was alright, and then he came back and unloaded another clip at the same place."
WRAL reports one of the deputies wounded in the incident was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment, where he underwent surgery Wednesday morning.
"The officer is out of surgery.... He's in stable condition right now," Cumberland County Sheriff Earl Butler told the station. "Any time anyone gets shot, particularly when it's one of ours out on the road or doing their job, it kind of brings it real close to home. He's a young man."
Officials said a second officer was treated at the scene for a graze wound. Details about the third wounded deputy were not immediately available.
