Threatening letter, white powder prompt evacuation of Jewish center
BOULDER, Colo. - A Jewish community center in Boulder, Colo. was evacuated Monday after a letter was discovered containing white powder - later found to be benign - reports CBS Denver.
The letter reportedly said, "you have enemies."
Officials with the Boulder County Sheriff's office and the Boulder Rural Fire Department responded to the Jewish Community Center (JCC) on Monday morning after the letter was found.
Boulder JCC leaders said in a notice to community members that a staff member found the envelope at 8:30 a.m. local time, according to the station. The letter reportedly had a local return address and officials were being sent to that location to investigate.
CBS Denver reports about a dozen preschool children were in the building at the time the letter surfaced and two employees who came into contact with it were treated by an ambulance crew.
"They are in great shape. A hazmat crew just got done with their work. They came from Boulder Fire Department and Boulder Rural Fire departments. They suited up, went into the building, brought the material out, tested it and it has come back as a benign substance," Boulder Sheriff's spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Hendry said Monday afternoon.
Sheriff's officials said that while they were searching the area, two packages - which they referred to as being suspicious - were found. A bomb squad was investigating them.
The FBI is involved in the investigation, reports the station.
